In June 2016 I graduated from the University of Groningen. I followed the B.Sc. as well as the M.Sc. Econometrics, Operations Research and Actuarial Science. Two months before the graduation I started looking for my first job. One month later I knew that this job would be a financial risk consultant.
I chose for this job because the financial industry always appealed to me and I wanted a job that gave me the possibility to work in different roles. Being a consultant does give me these opportunities.
Financial risk management is the complex analysis to control the financial risk within a company. Although it can be in any company, most of the time you will work for a financial institution (banks, insurance companies, asset managers etc. ). A project can sometimes be very specific, for example; building a model to predict prepayments on mortgages. Other projects can be more high level, like defining a framework how a bank can measure its interest rate risk.
The complexity of the job as consultant is not only in the statistical models you will build during your career, but also in the contact with your clients. The combination of the communication and challenging projects convinced me to become a consultant.
If you want more information on what it is like to be a financial risk consultant please contact me.
